Should you repair, resurface or replace?
A quick rule is to match the fix to the damage. A slab that is flat, solid and only worn can be resurfaced. A slab with a few cracks can be repaired and sealed. A slab with wide stepped cracks, many broken sections or major heaving is usually a candidate for replacement.
Resurfacing means grinding or cleaning the surface, then applying a thin layer of polymer-modified overlay. It can be finished plain, colored or stamped. It helps with appearance and wear but does not fix movement underneath.
Sacramento clay and tree roots cause much of the movement. If the base is the problem, a new slab may last longer than repeated repairs. See concrete driveways for replacement, or stamped patios for a new decorative surface.
